Who Was Claude Gentry?

Overview

Claude Gentry was a native of Baldwyn, Mississippi, born on July 25, 1902. He was a multifaceted individual known for his dedication to historical preservation, writing, and community involvement. He is particularly renowned for his efforts in preserving the history of the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads.

Historical Preservation

Claude Gentry devoted much of his adult life to the historical preservation of the Battle of Brice’s Crossroads. He established a log cabin museum next to his home in Baldwyn in 1961, which served as the forerunner to the current Mississippi’s Final Stands Interpretive and Visitors’ Center. Gentry was instrumental in organizing anniversary celebrations for the battle in 1954 and 1964, and he was responsible for erecting granite markers to commemorate the site, as mandated by the Mississippi Legislature in 1957​.

Legacy

Claude Gentry passed away in December 1992, but his legacy lives on through the Claude Gentry Theatre and the Mississippi’s Final Stands Interpretive and Visitors’ Center. His contributions to historical preservation and his written works continue to be celebrated and serve as valuable resources for understanding the history of Baldwyn and the surrounding area​
